What does Islam mean?

Islam means;

Submitting to Allah with Tawheed and compliance to him with obedience and dissociation from Shirk and its people’.

Islam in its general sense means is the worship of Allah in the way He prescribed through His Messengers, as has been mentioned by Allah the Mighty the and the Majestic in many ayat which show that the previous revealed laws were all submission (Islam) to Allah the Mighty and Majestic. Allah the Most High says concerning Ibraheem, “O our lord make us Muslims submitting, obeying and worshipping you alone, and from our progeny those who are Muslims, submitting to you” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:128)

Islam in its particular sense after the sending of the Prophet (salalla alahi waslam) refers to that which Muhammad (salalla alahi wasalam) was sent with. This is because that which the Prophet (salalla alahi wasalam) was sent with abrogates all of the previous religions so that whoever follows him is a Muslim, and whoever declines to follow him is not a Muslim. The Jews in the time of Musa (Moses) (alahi salam) were Muslims, and the Christians in the time of Eesaa (Jesus) (alahi salam) were Muslims but since the Prophet Muhammed (salalla alahi wasalam) was sent to mankind, they (Jews and Christians) disbelieved in him they are not Muslims. Furthermore this religion of Islam is the only religion acceptable to Allah and the only one which will benefit a person. Allah the Mighty and Majestic, says; “The only Religion acceptable to Allah is Islaam”. (Surah Aal-Imraan 3;19)

    Assalaamu alaykum I hesitated before clicking yes for the high school and family project because what I believe is needed is Muslim/ Islamic school / project which has operated upon a firm understanding on the Quran and Sunnah based upon the understanding of the pious predecessors ie. the Salafus Saleh.
    Labelling things Salafi such and such may cause people unaware of their deen to make incorrect assumtions about salafiya which may be taken from the media, other sects or from other Salafi organisations who have not conducted them selfves in a good maner.

      Walaikum asalaam. Thankyou for taking a few minutes of your time and visiting this blog. Just to point out the purpose of both polls is to ascertain whether or not the Muslim community in general in Leicester would benefit from either of those types of organisations, and not that they should be named ‘Salafi Organisations’ in principle. Rather the questions are there to gain a snapshot of people’s views and may give an indication as to whether or not the the people of Leicester who ascribe themselves to the way/ understanding of the Salaf (hence the term SALAFI) see a need or not for such institutions.

        Salaams, whilst i agree that the poll is indeed a good idea to get the views of the people however i beleive that if you ask those people who ascribe themselves to the salaf who live in Leicester they probably would all say yes to these much needed institutions. Those who don’t know what the term salafi means or what a salaf is of even those Muslims who don’t really practice may answer no. In my view it is the later who are in more need of these organisations!
        as we know Islam began as strange and the true Islam is stranger than ever as we can see all around us. The prohet salallaha alahi wa salam said the Muslims willl split into more sects that the jews or christians did (73) so i think that if you want a salafi school it will be small or alternatively if you want to call all muslims to an Islamic school from which you will call to the dawatus salafia once they are there, this would prevent any predijices or asumtions like it is a salafi school ie only for salafis. Alhamdullilah those who ascrive themselves to the salaf know the importance of ilm and such schools projects masjids which call to this understanding are definately needed with out a doubt. what is also needed is to remove the misconcetions about Islam. Is it possible to add a why? why not? Quetion to the pole as this may give a clearer indication of the peoples views? Jazakillahu khayran for your good efforts masha Allah.
