Our private sitting with the Mufti of Saudi Arabia Abdul-Azeez Aali Shayk

On wednesday 7th of april 2010 after Salatul Isha I and a group of brothers from Britain asked the Shaykh a number of questions pertaining to our life in the United Kingdom and the following question was asked by one of the brothers.

Question: Is it permissible to pray in a Deobandi masjid while there is the presence of a Salafi masajid?

Shaykh Abdul-Azeez:Are there graves in these Massjid (Deoband Masaajid)?

Questioner: No

Shaykh Abdul-Azeez: You can if the Imam fulfils the requirement of the Sharia and does not call to his falsehood and he conceals his falsehood.

    Assalamu ‘alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

Does this answer also apply when there is no salafi masjid in your vicinity. Also does the falsehood have to include shirk and kufr, or is calling towards lies and superstitions sufficient. All the deobandi-tableeghi masaajid I know of have imams that call towards joining the tableegh that preach from the book Fada’il A`mal, and this book is read to the brothers after congregational prayers after being encouraged to sit and listen. They also encourage the reading of Bahishti Zewar(Heavenly Ornaments). BarakAllahu feekum.

Walaikum asalsam wa rahmutullah wa barakatuh Muhammed

As you can see from the questioner`s question he stated “while there is presence of a salafi masajid. What I understood from the Sheikh is that he does not himself manifest
falsehood that reaches the level of kufr or shirk (Bidah mukafarah).Iin this case it would be haram to pray behind him. There is some difference of opinion on this issue and some Salafi Ulama from India/Pakistan have ruled that its impermissible to pray behind Deobandis absolutely. Here in Leicester this is an issue that the Salafi brothers differ on and some pray behind them while others do not. Allahu wa ‘alam.
