Barelviyyah – and the prayer offered behind them

The permanent committee of scholars issued the following verdict:

Question: There is a particular group in Pakistan called Barelviyyah, or An-Nuwaariyyah – an attribution to their current leader who is well known as An-Nuwaari, I request from your virtuousness the legislative ruling of these people, their belief and the prayer that is offered behind them, (and I request that) in order for it to be a coolness and peace for many of the hearts that do not know the reality (regarding them). So I remind you for a second time some of their superstitions and their well known beliefs:

1- The belief that the messenger – may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- is alive

2- The belief that the messenger – may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- is present and watching over them, specifically straight after the Friday prayer

3- The belief that the messenger – may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- gives intercession without Allah’s permission

4- They request from the Awliyaa (helpers/protectors) and the people in the graves to fulfill their needs and they perform the prayer in these locations

5- The construction of lofty domes and the illumination of the graves

6- Their well known saying: Oh messenger, Oh Mohammed – may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family

7- They become angry with he who says “Aameen” aloud in the prayer and raises his hands and they consider him to be “A Wahhaabi”

8- They find it extremely strange when a Siwaak is used before the prayer

9- They kiss their thumb nails (and then rub them across their eye lids) whilst making ablution, during the Adhaan and after the prayer

10- After the prayer, their Imaam constantly repeats the verse إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ [Allâh sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet], and then the congregation send their Salaat upon the prophet in a loud congregational manner

11- They gather and stand together after the Friday prayer singing and praising with a raised voice

12- During the month of Ramadhaan when they have completed the Qur’aan during the night prayer, they cook alot of food and distribute it in the Masjid with sweets

13- They construct lofty Masaajid and pay great importance to its beautification, and they write above the place where the Imaam stands ( for prayer): Oh Mohammed

14- They consider themselves to be the people of the Sunnah and correct Aqeedah and the others are mistaken

15- What is the legislative ruling of the prayer offered behind them? Bearing in mind that I am a medical student in Karachi and I live next to a Masjid that is supervised by this Barelvi group?

The answer: According to these descriptions, it is not permissible to offer prayer behind them, and neither is (the prayer) correct if the person is aware of their situation, because the great majority (of what was mentioned) are descriptions of disbelief and innovation that are in contradiction to the Tawheed which Allah sent His messengers with and (which Allah) revealed His books with and it clearly clashes with the Qur’aan, like His statement glorified be He:

إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُمْ مَيِّتُونَ
Verily, you (O Muhammad) will die and verily, they (too) will die
Az-Zumar 30

and His statement:

وَأَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا
And the mosques are for Allâh (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allâh
Al-Jinn 18

And (it is upon the person) to rebuke the innovations they are upon in a good way, and if they accept then all praise is due to Allah, and if they do not accept then he is to avoid and forsake them and offer his prayer in the Masaajid of Ahlus-Sunnah. And in the close friend of Ar-Rahmaan he has a good example (to follow) regarding his statement:

وَأَعْتَزِلُكُمْ وَمَا تَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَأَدْعُو رَبِّي عَسَى أَلَّا أَكُونَ بِدُعَاءِ رَبِّي شَقِيًّا
“And I shall turn away from you and from those whom you invoke besides Allâh. And I shall call on my Lord; and I hope that I shall not be unblest in my invocation to my Lord.”
Maryam 48

And with Allah lies success, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Mohammed, his family and his companions
